Spam constitutes more than 90 percent of all e-mails and blocks electronic mailboxes. Most filtering systems are able to detect only certain spam messages. New types of spam pass unobstructed and desired e-mails may get blocked because they contain apparently “suspicious” words. Many e-mail users have to spend a lot of time to look through their inboxes to delete unwanted messages and to search for desired mail in their junk-mail folder. ServerSideSecurity – a spam filtering system developed by STRATO and the Humboldt University of Berlin and Max-Planck-Institute – effectively tackles these problems.
Delivering desired e-mails
ServerSideSecurity uses a multi-level filtering system that, most of all, looks for the ten percent of wanted e-mails instead of analysing 90 percent of unwanted ones. The filtering system anonymously interprets the relationship between sender and receiver. Have they corresponded so far? Do they have common friends? If so, they are unlikely to send spam messages to each other and ServerSideSecurity lets the e-mail pass.
Discovering spam in an instant
The multitude and diversity of spam messages makes it difficult to separate them out. Spammers come up with new and even more refined methods to outsmart filtering systems. Therefore a good antispam filter must quickly ward off new spam surges. STRATO and Professor Scheffer from the Humboldt University and Max-Planck-Institute teamed up to create such a filter. STRATO’s mail system with more than 200 million messages per day represents the perfect environment, in which to develop such a tool.
Selective filtering of junk-mail
Within STRATO’s mail system spam surges are speedily detected. Counter measures catch quickly. ServerSideSecurity was the first filtering system to block picture-spam successfully. It analyses the e-mail as a whole and thus detects particular characteristics, so to speak the fingerprint of the message. Meanwhile, other filtering systems were unable to make out picture spam because they focussed on singular text modules. Fingerprinting does not only help to detect picture spam, it also allows fighting PDF-spam, retro-spam, audio-spam and video-spam.
One step ahead of spammers
ServerSideSecurity trains itself with self-improving algorithms. The filtering system does not wait for the spammers’ next move but creates its own junk-mail in order to develop countermeasures. When the next spam surge arrives ServerSideSecurity is prepared for it.
