STRATO Data Centres: Data-vaults on the Internet
STRATO is the second largest European Web host operating two company-owned, certified, high-performance data centres in Berlin and Karlsruhe. Both are optimally linked to the international Internet with redundant, extremely wide bandwidth, 35 Gigabyte optical fibre cables via DE-CIX and BCIX. STRATO exclusively implements state-of-the-art server hardware from well-known brand manufacturers like Sun Microsystems, Network Appliance and Cisco Systems. The hardware selection, location and connection of the computer centres guarantee maximum security, availability and performance - around the clock, even at load peaks.
About us
|
STRATO data centres have been certified according to rigorous ISO 27001 standards: the same strict standards that are regularly used to certify data centres of banks and insurance companies. A battery-supported uninterruptible power supply (UPS), redundant diesel generators including a week’s supply of fuel for independent operation, as well as a laser-triggered fire alarm and a nitrogen-based fire extinguishing system, secure the continuous operation of all servers and network components. The buildings are not outwardly recognisable as data centres, and their exact locations are classified.
Maximum data security guaranteed
STRATO has developed an intelligent backup structure, with the state-of-the-art backup systems from Network Appliance, which guarantee the immediate availability of all data at any time. All data are distributed for backup in RAID4 hard drive systems and each hard drive block is additionally backed up in an auxiliary backup area. In addition, all data – which is continuously backed up between Berlin and Karlsruhe - is constantly available in both data centres.

Backups included
STRATO not only secures current customer data, but also up to ten older versions of the customer data. This enables customers to independently restore the old data via FTP for weeks after, if these have been mistakenly changed. This patented technology, called „BackupControl“, includes so-called „snapshots“ from MySQL databases. This enables STRATO to always have ten backups of all data available.
Suitable hardware for rapid growth
The central interface between data centre and Internet demands maximum performance. For this reason, STRATO implements the Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) from Cisco Systems, and is the first Web host throughout Europe to do so. CRS-1 manages the continuously increasing amounts of data without a problem and enables enhancements during running operations. STRATO utilises the fibre optic backbone of the parent corporation, freenet AG, to connect to both the national and international Internet. Redundant connections with a bandwidth of 35 Gigabyte per second, enable extremely short access times throughout Europe and UK and ensures stabile transfer rates.
Efficient and economical
STRATO faces its responsibility towards the environment when it comes to consumption of electricity. STRATO was able to lower the primary energy consumption in shared Web hosting 90 per cent, by switching to the Sun Microsystems T2000 server with UltraSPARC processors. STRATO depends on state-of-the-art AMD “high efficiency” processors from the 64-bit Opteron product range for dedicated hosting.
