STRATO awarded Berlin Environmental Prize
Web host honoured for exemplary climate change action
2 November 2007 - STRATO, Europe’s second largest web host, has been awarded the Berlin Environmental Prize for Commerce and Innovation. BUND, one of Germany’s leading environmental NGOs, honoured STRATO for its ecological decisions and dedication to climate protection.
The Berlin Environmental Prize distinguishes outstanding, ideal and unique achievements. As a company, STRATO actively discusses climate protection and encourages people to care about the environment and as a result of its ecological stance has been awarded the prize.
STRATO has not only increased its energy efficiency significantly but the company will also power its data centres with NaturEnergie AG’s renewable hydropower energy from the upper Rhine as of 2008. Due to energy saving technology STRATO has decreased energy consumption by approximately 30 per cent per customer over the past 18 months, sparing the environment an additional 15,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Andreas Jarfe, director of BUND, commented, “At STRATO, they reach environmental-friendly decisions in a serious and consistent manner. This makes them both exemplary and - thus far - unique.”
Hans-Jürgen Nantke, PhD, head of the German centre for emissions trading, remarked: “There will always be pioneers that discover new grounds and help shape them. STRATO is one of these.”
Damian Schmidt, CEO of STRATO, commented, “STRATO shows that a company can be ecologically conscious even in energy dependent industries such as web hosting. We are pleased that our commitment to the environment is being acknowledged and regard this prize as an incentive for other companies in the IT industry.”
