How do I reset the root password for my dedicated server if I have forgotten it?

You can use the recovery system to reset the current root password for your dedicated server if you happen to forget it.

1a.  First log into the STRATO Customer Login. Go to the overview of your packages and select Settings for your server package to access your server login. Next select Manage Settings. Then go to Backup & Recovery and select Recovery Manager to start the recovery system for your server.

1b.  If your sever has CP in its name, proceed from the Customer Login to Settings and from there to the Cloud Panel. Launch the recovery system by selecting your server. Go to Action and then to Restart. Select the recovery system and then confirm the restart.

2.  As soon as the server has successfully started in the recovery system, you can log into the recovery system using the password and details provided under server data. If your server has CP in its name, you will find the data in the server overview after selecting your server.

3.  Now mount the hard drives of your server to enable access. You can find out the exact name of the hard drives or the RAID device by entering the command “fdisk –l”. The name of the device on current RAID servers is /dev/md[x]... The numbers may differ depending on the setup. You can identify the system partition based on the size of the RAID partitions.
Mounting is carried out by entering the command: mount /dev/md0 /mnt

4.  Now create a chroot environment by entering the command: chroot /mnt

5.  A new password can now be set up with the command: passwd

The root password can be reset without downtime or rebooting your server. To reset the root password for your virtual server, first log into the password-protected STRATO Customer Login. Then click on Settings in your package overview. If you are taken directly to your package, select Manage Settings. Once server management has loaded, go to the menu item Server Configuration and select Server Data.

An overview of the most important data of your V-server is displayed. The lower part of the screen contains an option to request a new root password. Make a note of your host name, which you will need in the next step. Confirm your selection by clicking on Next.
