How do I install Joomla at STRATO?

Joomla is a freely available content management system (CMS) that is under the GNU General Public License. It is distinguished by its simple operation and flexibility. We describe the manual installation of Joomla in this article.

In order to install Joomla, it is necessary for you to save the installation package on your web storage space. We recommend downloading directly from joomla.org

Before you start the actual installation, we recommend checking the following things:

  • You can establish an FTP connection to your storage space
  • You already created a MySQL database and you know the access data
  • You have at least 15 MB of free storage space on your web storage space

Since the installation package is normally a .zip file, please unzip it locally first. Then upload the unzipped files on to your web storage space via FTP. This process may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection.

After successfully uploading the installation package, please open the following address:

http://www.desiredname.de/ (please use your own domain name instead of desiredname.de)

If you have saved the data in a sub-directory within your storage space, please modify the address accordingly. If, for example, the data was created in a folder /joomla, the correct path is http://desiredname.de/joomla.

The installation assistant is automatically opened when the correct address is entered:

First, select the desired language and fill all points with a * and please then click on the Next button. Please pay attention to the correct spelling of your email address and please make a note of your administrator password.

The database is configured in the next step..

For hosting customers

Server namerdbms.strato.de
User nameU123456
Passwordxxxxxx
Database nameDB123456

Users of our hosting packages have the possibility of viewing the information in their Customer Service Area under the Settings and Database Administration menu options.

Server customers normally have the possibility to view the information for the MySQL databases of their server in the administration interface (for example, Plesk).

After entering the data, please click again on Next.

If there is an incorrect entry, you will receive an error message: Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL, this means that a connection to the database could not be established. In this case, check the access data entered for the database.

For this point, please have your information for the MySQL database you created on hand.

In the next step before the final installation, you will see an overview of the specified data.

It is recommended for new Joomla users to install the example data; this makes it easier for them to use Joomla during the first steps.

Installation check

STRATO hosting package users do not have to make any further changes to the settings, because their storage space is already configured correspondingly. If the installation is done on a personal server package, perform the required adjustments directly in your server configuration if necessary.

If all required points are marked correspondingly with Yesplease click on Install..

In the following step, exit the Joomla installation. It is necessary for you to delete the directory /installation on your web storage space using your FTP account. The administration interface can only be opened once this has occurred.

After you have deleted the /installation directory, you can select the Administrator point and log in with the administrator user name and the assigned administrator password.

The Joomla installation is hereby complete. You can now begin to customize the Joomla administration interface to fit your own preferences and needs.

You can reach the administration interface from your Joomla installation at any time under the address:

http://www.desiredname.de/administrator/

here, you will have to enter your own domain name and, if applicable, adjust the path.

After the installation, please adjust the paths stored in Joomla, because Joomla uses the real system paths by default here, starting with /mnt/. However, these may change without any notice due to internal optimization work or a transfer to a different storage volume. Please only use the absolute paths beginning with /home/.

/home/strato/www/first_two_letters/www.desiredname.de/htdocs/

You will find a detailed instruction manual for the correct paths in the following FAQ article:

Beachte auchWhat are the names of the paths in your system?

You will find the paths stored in the Joomla administrator area under the Configuration item.

You will find the protocol directory under the System item.

You will find the Temp directory under the Server item.

Please remember that we cannot offer any more notes with regard to Joomla usage, because this is software that does not come from our company. Should you have any further questions about the configuration, we recommend visiting the official site under joomla.org Here you will find a lot of information, plug-ins, additional modules and knowledge about Joomla.
