Frequently asked questions

Which is the right hosting package for me?

Which hosting plan is best for you really depends on your specific requirements. Consider the following questions before making your choice:

How many different projects do I want to run?
The inexpensive Hosting Starter package is often sufficient if you only want to run your own domain. But it is wiser to opt directly for a larger package if you already know that you will be running several web hosting projects. Naturally, you can register and use additional domains at any time if the need arises.

How large are the files I intend to upload?
Take a look at your existing content and make a rough estimate of how much storage space you currently need, especially if you want to enable downloads of large files or maintain a photo blog. High-resolution photos, for instance, need around 20 MB of storage space. So the storage space for 1,000 images would be 20 GB. E-commerce projects with a large number of items also take up quite a lot of web space.

How many mailboxes do I need?
This depends on how many of your employees or organisational units will be assigned their own email address.

You realise later on that your selected package is not big enough or that you need a smaller one than you initially envisaged? Don’t worry, you can switch to a larger or smaller package at any time. The fees paid in advance will of course be credited to you if you move to a larger one. The data you have already uploaded or configured will remain entirely unchanged. We recommend that you save a backup copy of the website to your computer before switching to a smaller package. The contract period of your newly selected plan begins again after downgrading to a lower-priced package. There are no extra charges for a downgrade.

What are my advantages with web hosting? How can I use it?

Whether you are a company, freelancer, club, blogger or hobby user – our affordable web hosting packages are suitable for both personal websites and business web projects of any size. As a web hosting customer, you will use highly available, high-performance servers in our TÜV-certified German data centres. The latest PHP version, smart caching, lightning-fast SSDs and tuned RAM keep your website running at top speed. You can do more than just run websites in this powerful and GDPR-compliant environment: you can also manage your domains, cloud storage space, databases and mailboxes with flexible storage volume.

All hosting functions are intuitive and easy to operate, even for users without specific IT skills. But there are innovative tools for experts as well. Transparency is another of our clear priorities. Our hosting services do not come with hidden costs or small print. All parts of the contact are worded clearly and simply.

What options do I have to build a website?

Our hosting packages come with extensive options to build your website: Numerous applications, including popular content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla!, TYPO3 and Drupal, are easily installed with a single click. Even technical novices can create high-quality websites with these solutions. Advanced users can draw on various programming languages like PHP, Perl, Python and Ruby. All packages are also equipped with MySQL databases on SSD.

Can I run several domains in one hosting package?

Yes. You can set up several web projects, different domains and subdomains within the hosting packages. The number of websites you can run simultaneously depends on the size of the package. Naturally, it is also possible to redirect domains or subdomains to a subdirectory on your web space or to an external destination. You can add, remove or move domains at any time in your STRATO Login.

Can I manage my website using SFTP?

Of course. All web hosting packages allow SFTP access, which means you can easily exchange data between your local computer and the web space. And it doesn’t even matter which operating system is installed. The SFTP protocol can also be used to list and rename directories. The number of SMTP accesses depends on your selected plan. Multiple SFTP accesses come with the advantage that you can, for instance, give external service providers such as web designers access to certain directories or files.
